Edward Perello is Research Fellow at George Mason University, where he currently works on security policy for genome editing tools. He is the Principal Researcher of Arkurity, a boutique consulting firm conducting research on public policy challenges in synthetic biology, conversation biotech, and biosecurity, an Emerging Leaders in Biosecurity fellow at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, and a SynBio LEAP fellow. Edward serves on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Taskforce on Synthetic Biology and Biodiversity Conservation, and is working with conservation groups to realize new opportunities for biotechnology to restore the world’s coral reefs. Edward's research interests include the oversight of human genome editing, state and non-state actor development of biological capabilities, the application of synthetic biology to marine and terrestrial conservation, and governance of emerging technologies. Edward founded and served as Chief Business Officer of Desktop Genetics, a CRISPR biotechnology company, from 2012-18.
